To test a site for asbestos a Licensed Assessor will take air samples and take time to check the site’s precise cleanliness.
These samples are tested in an independent IANZ laboratory, certified in testing for asbestos. The licensed assessor will issue a Clearance Certificate if the test results confirm the presence of asbestos on site, where re-occupation of the site can then occur. The national standard safe level of asbestos is 1 part per million.
A survey will determine the quantity, nature and presence of asbestos and the danger it is to those in contact of the site.
An asbestos survey follows a structured guideline and will result in an Asbestos Register, determining how the affected area can be used and what maintenance work can go ahead. Testing and reporting of asbestos on site will take approximately 3 days.
The Asbestos Testing & Removal Process
A Licensed Assessor will need to come on site in order to obtain air samples by conducting an air test.
By running an Air Pump, which has been attached to a cassette filter, at a determined airflow rate for a specified period of time, the air can be monitored and tested via the cassette filter.
The cassette filter is then microscopically checked by an independent IANZ laboratory, accredited for testing for the presence of asbestos. They will then issue an Air Sample Certificate which will inform you of the type of and levels of asbestos on the site.
If it is confirmed that you have asbestos on site then you have 3 options to handle the asbestos; Do nothing, where possible cover the building material containing asbestos, or remove material containing asbestos. To read more information on these options, click here.
To return the specific asbestos risk zone back to an acceptable and safe level. After removal is complete a licensed assessor will take samples of the site to be tested by an independent IANZ laboratory to ensure safe asbestos levels.
A Clearance Certificate is issued by the laboratory once the site is safe, allowing for normal use of the site again.
