In order to confirm whether you have asbestos on site or not you will need a Licensed Assessor to take air samples and to check the site’s precise cleanliness.
An independent IANZ laboratory, certified in testing for asbestos, takes on these samples conducting the final tests. The national standard safe level of asbestos is 1 part per million.
If the laboratory results confirm the un-safe presence of asbestos then the licensed assessor will issue a Clearance Certificate, now re-occupation of the site can occur.
A survey will determine the nature, quantity, and presence of asbestos and the danger it is to those who have come into contact with the site.
An Asbestos Register is produced from an asbestos survey which is used as a reference on how the affected area can now be used and what maintenance work can go ahead. Testing and reporting of asbestos on site will take approximately 3 days.
An air test will be completed on site by a Licensed Assessor to obtain air samples. The assessor will run an Air Pump, attached to a cassette filter, for a specified period of time at a determined airflow rate.
The cassette filter is taken on by an independent IANZ laboratory, accredited for testing for the presence of asbestos who microscopically check the filter. This results in an Air Sample Certificate which states the type of and levels of asbestos on the site.
If you do have asbestos on site then you have 3 options to handle the asbestos; Do nothing, where possible cover the building material containing asbestos, or remove material containing asbestos. To read more information on these options, click here.
After removal is complete a licensed assessor will take samples of the site to be tested by an independent IANZ laboratory to ensure that the specific asbestos risk zone has been returned back to an acceptable and safe level.
A Clearance Certificate is issued by the laboratory once the site is confirmed to have safe asbestos levels, allowing full use of the site again.
